Hiking Franschhoek

The postcard-worthy Franschhoek Valley boasts an abundance of natural splendour that is best enjoyed while hiking one of the area’s diverse trails for all levels

Here are some of our favourites…

Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve

If you are looking for breathtaking views of the Valley plus an abundance of diverse flora, this unique reserve is for you.

Situated in the Franschhoek Mountains, it offers a range of walks and hikes for every fitness level, from one-hour doddles to full-day expeditions, and even trail running routes.

We can highly recommend the 6.8 km Uitkyk Trail (which is also great for birding) and the 9.3 km Uitkyk via Du Toitskop and Manganese Trail, which is a bit more challenging but offers even more opportunity for exploring the local flora, birds and vistas. If you have a bit longer and would like to discover striking mountain and valley scenes plus a few waterfalls, pack plenty of water and hit the 13.4 km Perdekop via Du Toitskop Trail

Speak to our Guest Liaison team about acquiring an entry permit for the reserve.

Du Toitskop Lookout Ridge

This moderate 3.2 km loop trail near Franschhoek takes an average of 1 h 30 min to complete.

The well-maintained route may be short, but it offers a plethora of unique flora (including beautiful varieties of protea and other fynbos) and exceptional views, especially from the ridge lookout point.

It is considered moderately challenging, with a few steep inclines and descents.

Remember to pack some snacks, as there is a great picnic spot en route.

Bergriver Dam

The majestic mountains surrounding the Berg River Dam in Franschhoek offer plenty of wonderful hiking opportunities.

Purchase a full-day permit and set off from the entrance on Robertsvlei Road. From there, you’ll discover miles of paths leading to scenic routes through the mountains.

The options range from leisurely walks to challenging hikes, all of which are filled with vibrant mountain fynbos and plenty of opportunities for birding.

For a great day out, make your way up to the lookout points for unrivalled views of the Franschhoek Valley, the Boland mountainscapes and the landscape stretching out to the southern ocean (with Table Mountain visible in the distance).

Lower Cats Path

This unique trail follows the historic 1819 wagon track. Franschhoek was previously known as Elephants Corner thanks to the elephants that used to inhabit the region, and this is also the route they used to walk down into the valley to calve. The French Huguenots who settled in the area in 1688 caused the elephants to leave, but the path retains its historic significance.

The 2.9 km route takes just 1 h 15 min to complete, although it is considered moderately challenging.
