Festive Season in The Lakes
Magical Festive Activities in The Lakes
Christmas and new year in the Lake District offer an unrivalled kind of magic for the whole family. Soft, snowy carpets cover magical woodlands and sparkle in the winter sun; white-topped peaks rise like frosted Christmas puddings; and charming villages come alive with traditional cheer. We share a few of our favourite ways to celebrate the season…
Be Dazzled by the Christmas Lights
Dazzling displays of Christmas lights are turned on throughout the Lakes from November, with the famous Ambleside Christmas lights switch-on on 19 November including a lantern parade through town; community stalls in Market Cross; a firework display in Rothay Park; and two Christmas cruises by Windermere Lake Cruises.
Browse a Christmas Market
The beloved Windermere Christmas Celebration will offer festive fun for all ages on 10 and 11 December this year. Join the community in coming together to browse dozens of local, festive-themed food and drink stalls, enjoy jolly live entertainment, and more.
Other wonderful Christmas markets take place in Cumbria throughout November and December, offering locals and visitors alike the opportunity to pick up unique gifts, trinkets, and treats. We love the market in the quaint, traffic-free village of Hawkshead, where cobbled streets are lit with festive lights, stalls abound, and live entertainment gets everyone in the Christmas spirit.
Search for Reindeer
Santa’s Winter Wonderland at Hayes Garden World offers the little ones a chance to journey through a fantastical festive scene to help Santa search for his missing reindeer, playing snowball games with snowmen and fishing for food for penguins along the way.
Watch a Traditional Pantomime
Thespians of all ages will love the unique festive tradition of a pantomime at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, just over a 30-minute drive from Windermere. This year’s production of The Borrowers - a charming re-telling of a childhood favourite - is sure to delight and set imaginations aflight.
Experience a Historical Christmas
Also a 30-minute scenic drive from Windermere is the charming market town of Ulverston, where the Dickensian Christmas Festival on 26 and 27 November will transport visitors back 150 years to the Christmas of Victorian-era England, with plenty of stalls, entertainment and - of course - the chance to dress in their finest tops and tails.
