Discover the Exclusive Cottages of Leeu Estates

Discerning couples, families, and groups of friends looking to experience the best of the South African Winelands need look no further than the private luxury cottages on Leeu Estates.

The various five-star premium options are perfect for romantic, family, or group getaways.

Read on to discover which unique cottage most piques your interest and suits your preferences and needs…

Max House

For those looking for a memorable getaway steeped in history, the stately Max House is located within an original gabled Cape Dutch building.

The documented history of Max House dates back to 1831, when the house, two outbuildings, and surrounding farmland were granted to Jacobus Petrus Kriel. The farmstead was built in the simple, neo-classical style of the time, and was altered and expanded over the years. Some of the original internal wooden doors are still in use, and parts of an original gable can be found in the roof.

Today, guests can enjoy an executive suite, two classic rooms, a living room with a fireplace, a dining room, and a private garden. A pantry and kitchen are also available for the use of a private chef.

Cellar Cottage

Further historical charm can be enjoyed at Cellar Cottage, in the original cellar of the Dassenberg Farm of 1831.

It has a gable that dates back to 1800, and elements of stone and clay construction that also show its age. It sports a wooden door with a band-and-pintle hinge that dates further back, to the late 1700s.

Fast forward to 2022, and it currently serves as a five-star private cottage with an executive suite with a terrace, a deluxe room, two terraces leading off a living room with a fireplace, a pantry, and access to a private garden.

The Oaks

The latest addition to the Estates, The Oaks cottage offers privacy, luxurious interiors, and unparalleled views of the vineyard-lined, historically-rich Franschhoek Valley.

Great for nature-loving families or four adults travelling together, it is surrounded by vineyards, vibrant bottle brush, and Franschhoek’s renowned flora.

It includes a private parking bay, two rooms, a comfortable lounge area, a hot tub, and a large terrace garden.

Vineyard Cottage

This spacious, sun-filled option is set apart by its magnificent terrace and private plunge pool overlooking the manicured vineyards of Leeu Estates, which are planted with Sauvignon Blanc destined to be made into a house-style wine for the Leeu Collection properties.

Guests can also enjoy views of the lovingly landscaped gardens, encircled by Franschhoek’s famous mountainous backdrop - the perfect setting for its luxurious interiors, which comprise two rooms and a shared lounge with a fireplace.

Staying in this option offers easy access to the Leeu Spa by Healing Earth and Gym, where an immersive wellness sanctuary offers holistic treatments and experiences by expert therapists using pure and premium products made from local ingredients like Pinotage, Kalahari melon, marula, and mongongo nut.

Fynbosch Cottage

Nature lovers wanting to make the most of the spectacular setting will love Fynbosch Cottage, named after the small but world-renowned belt of unique, colourful and fragrant natural shrubland or heathland vegetation located in the Western Cape.

Nestled against the slopes of Franschhoek’s famous Dassenberg mountain, this cottage includes a landscaped private garden, a sparkling plunge pool, an outdoor hot tub, and a timber pergola veranda.

Protea House

Last but certainly not least, Protea House is situated above one of the earthen dams on the Estates.

This unique cottage was once the main dwelling of Dieu Donne farm, before it was acquired by Leeu Estates. From detailing and certain features, it is assumed that the house was built in the 1930s. It has some Modernist and Cape Revival features, but most of its 1930s detailing has been lost.

It is believed (but not verified) that - in the late 1940s and early 1950s - it was home to Lee Radziwill, the younger sister of Jaqueline Bouvier Kennedy, who visited her here before her marriage to John F. Kennedy.

There are graves on top of the hill above the house, where a previous owner and his wife are buried in order to have an eternal view over their beloved Franschhoek Valley.

Today, Protea House has been transformed into a spacious and unforgettable home-away-from-home for discerning travellers, who can enjoy its executive suite with terrace, deluxe room, classic room, open-plan lounge area, pantry, private pool and pool house, as well as the dedicated ‘braai’ area for a truly South African ‘barbecue’ experience.
