A world that only exists in Windermere
Lake Windermere is possibly the most famous body of water in the Lake District…
With 16 lakes in the Lake District to visit, Windermere is the largest natural lake in England at 11.2 miles and 220 feet deep also making it the longest.
Formed a little over 13,000 years ago during the last major ice age by two glaciers, one from the Troutbeck valley and the other from the Fairfield Horseshoe. The lake contains 18 islands, the largest is the privately owned Belle Isle (16.18 hectares, 40.0 acres) opposite Bowness and about 1km in length and the only to be inhabited; a vast contrast to the smallest island, Maiden Holme, with one small tree on it.
Over the years, just like the residents and locals’, annual events have made Windermere their home. Here are two such events you may look to diarizing for next year:
• The Great North Swim - which will be taking place from Friday 10 to Sunday 13 June 2022.
• All England Open Stone Skimming Championships - considered one of the most eccentric championships in English sport, this sporting event has become well-loved by locals and visitors alike.
There is still plenty to do and see all year round:
• For avid walkers and water sports enthusiasts, Windermere is a must! They are numerous trails to embark on, one of which is a scenic 45-mile circular route around the lake, via the Windermere Way and around 10,000 – plus boats are available in great variety (speedboats, powerboats, yachts, etc.) at ‘Bowness-on-Windermere’.
